There will be a Neighborhood Leader Program introduction and training on Friday, April 13, at 4:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist building at 129 NW “E” St. in Grants Pass. Joyce Chapman, one of the Neighborhood Leader Coordinators from Jackson County will be here to introduce the program, show how it works, and discuss its importance to our winning elections in Southern Oregon.

The Neighborhood Leader Program (NLP) is a Get Out The Vote program. Neighborhood leaders are Democrats and other progressive-leaning people who contact Democrats and progressives voters in their neighborhoods to talk about issues, introduce candidates, and, most importantly, remind their neighbors to vote and get their ballots turned in on time.

Research has shown that face to face contacts are by far the best way to ensure that voters actually vote and turn in their ballots. In the last special election for Measure 101, Jackson County Neighborhood Leaders were very active, and the results of their efforts spoke volumes about the effectiveness of the Neighborhood Leader Program. The overall Democratic Party voter turnout in Jackson County was 45.2%. Areas where Neighborhood Leaders canvassed had a 79.2% Democratic Party turnout. That’s a 34% increase of Democratic Party voters! Face to face contacts matter. Neighborhood Leaders helped Jackson County pass Measure 101 by almost 10,000 votes.

If we can get our Josephine County Democrats and progressives to turnout out like that for elections, we will be winning elections, even here in Josephine County, especially in non-presidential elections like the upcoming November election. Please come and learn about this important program. Getting out the vote is probably the single most important thing on which we must be focused. Nothing of what we want will matter if it isn’t codified.
