The hurricane in Texas and Louisiana has created an immense need and call for donations from around the world to help. Closer to home, the Chetco Bar fire, which has not attracted much national attention, continues to threaten homes and livelihoods closer to home.
Several fires in Southern Oregon and Northwest California have displaced people and caused a hit to the economy of Brookings and Gold Beach. The Chetco Bar is no longer a threat to the city of Brookings, but it, and fires near Gasquet and Happy Camp are contributing to unhealthy air quality all over the region, causing a loss in tourist business on the coast. The Food Bank in Brookings reports it has plenty of food, but the Tolowa dee-ne Nation, which owns the Ship Ashore Resort, says money and volunteers are needed there as they are housing about 50 victims displaced by the Chetco Bar fire.
