Find out what’s going on in local, state and national politics at the Josephine County Democrats monthly luncheon at Climate City Brewery in Grants Pass. This month’s gathering takes place Thursday, June 27th, at noon in the conference room. Enjoy a salad, sandwich or personal pizza among other items during a progressive discussion.
This month’s emphasis will be on dealing with non-progressive events in the community and outward, what’s bugging you, and how we can energize the electorate in preparation for the 2020 election. Hot legislation in the Statehouse right now is HB 2020, set to lower greenhouse emissions by 2050 and SB 47 which would require rafters to purchase a $17 annual permit (for waterway improvements). Our conservative state representatives have been kicking up a fuss about both.
In Congress Sen. Jeff Merkley’s Wildfire Smoke Emergency Declaration Act giving the president the power to declare smoke from wildfires an emergency, and his Smoke Ready Communities Act that would provide smoke-proofing grants for schools, small business and vulnerable citizens aims to help deal with the hazards of being surrounded by forest land. Merkley could use some support for his bills. Reminder: the Oregon primary is just 11 months away.
Which Democrats will be left to vote for by Oregon’s May primary, and do you think the primary should be moved up? Bring your curiosity and ideas. The public is invited.
