Redistricting – Status

Yesterday, the Oregon Legislature released proposed maps. Here is the link to see all of them.

This post highlights Congressional Districts. As you know, currently Josephine County is split up between CD 2 and 4. Here is the current map (click on map to enlarge):

There appears to be two alternatives being considered. Plan A puts all of Josephine County into CD2 with Eastern Oregon along with all of Jackson and half of Douglas. Plan B puts all of Josephine County in CD4 along with a portion of Jackson and all of Douglas.

What do you think about both maps?

For the next step in this process, committee members will hear testimony from the public, as well as consider additional maps created and submitted using the ESRI map drawing program, which can be found here. Members of the public are highly encouraged to submit written or oral testimony during the scheduled hearings, and/or craft and submit a map of their own. The deadline for submitting alternative maps is September 8th at 5pm. You can find much more detailed information about this and the entire committee hearing process here, including how to submit testimony.

A Summary follows:

NOTE: Deadline to submit written testimony is September 14 at 5:30pm.

There is no doubt that Josephine County would not be served as a lower valley county whose needs are to sustainability of infrastructure, tourism, forestry and dependence upon I-5 as part of its citizens needs and connectivity.

Plan A is a no go.
Plan B is a strong consideration to appropriately linking communities of interest and businesses that depend heavily upon tourism from and to the coastal counties and to the necessary services and connections created through I-5.

I agree I’d like to emphasize the more diverse tourism in that that we have the gateway to the coast, Rogue River tourism with Orange Torpedo Trips, neighboring Ashland, Applegate Valley and wine purveyors and the downtown itself. It’s not a cow town it’s a tourist town . We have different issues than getting water to the alfalfa.
